The dog by car (and by bus and taxi)

The art. 169 of the highway code reads as follows: “(…) The transport of domestic animals in numbers greater than one and in any case in conditions that constitute an impediment or danger to driving is prohibited. The transport of only pets is allowed, even in numbers greater than one, provided that they are kept in a special cage or container or in the rear compartment at the driver's seat specifically divided by a net or other similar suitable means which, if permanently installed, must be authorized by the competent provincial office of the General Management of the MCTC ".

The dictation of the rule is clear and denotes the intention of the legislator to ensure that the car with one or more dogs onboard cannot endanger road safety due to incorrect or improper transport of animals. No rule, however, is contained in art. 169, nor in any other legislative provision relating to the safety of the animal transported. It is, therefore, appropriate to consider all three ways that can be used to make the dog deal with a car trip and evaluate its safety level not for road traffic but for the animal.

The kennel (rigid kennel)

If properly secured in the car and of the right size, the kennel is certainly the best tool for transporting a dog in the car, ensuring maximum safety: in the event of an accident or a sudden stop, the use of the transport - better if placed perpendicular to the direction of travel - can limit the traumatic consequences both for the animal, for the driver and the others transported. Bournemouth Airport Transfers to London

The safety belt for dogs

Especially for medium-large dogs, it is possible to use the safety belt for dogs, a harness that, once tied around the dog, attaches to the three-point safety belt already installed on the vehicle. Crash tests with silhouettes of dogs of various sizes have shown that, in the event of an accident, the belts do not fully guarantee the safety of the dog.

The trunk with a rigid dividing net

The rigid net is mandatory when you opt for transporting the dog in the trunk of the car. It is one of the most used ways, but it is certainly not the safest one.
